Gsypool.com and getting started!
Hey there
My name is Adrian Locke.
I've been involved in 8-Ball Pool for over 40 years in Guernsey and 25 years in Jersey.
I left school at the age of 15 (actually I got kicked out!) and went to work for a local pool table supplier in 1983. Two years later, I was organising my first knockout pool competition at the now defunct L'Erée Bay Hotel.
I then went on to establish my own business, International Leisure, in 1990, at the age of 23.
Then I branched out into Jersey in year 2000 (Langley Automatics and Planet Pool & Snooker). During 2004, I co-hosted and sponsored the European Pool Championships at Jersey's presigous Hotel de France.
An event was regarded as one of the best European Pool Championships ever held.
With the help of my dedicated teams we currently supply and maintain more than 100 Supreme "World Championship" Pool Tables to bars and clubs in both islands.
I’m currently working with enthusiastic players on both islands, organising great leagues and competitions.
Developing and bringing new technologies to the game, which is also a god send when trying to administer the pool leagues on the islands. I truly love what I do and feel privileged to do it.
There really is nothing quite like the friendly competition and camaraderie you will experience as being part of the Guernsey pool scene.
Playing against the same group of players on a regular basis builds great lasting friendships and is a terrific way of socialising.
Whether you're a beginner starting out or a more experienced player looking for a new challenge, I think you could really enjoy the local pool leagues.
There can also be fabulous health benefits to playing the game of pool - the strength that is built through improved mental reflexes.
Having to make quick mental decisions and strategising helps to exercise and develop a keen, sharp mind, which in turn also makes you a better player!
Now if I may, I want to share some of my insights and tips for joining and enjoying 8-Ball Pool leagues and competitions in Guernsey, I'll go over things like how our leagues are structured, what to expect as a new player, strategies for improving your game and advice for climbing the league rankings over time.
My goal is to help more people get involved in the great sociable game of 8-Ball Pool.
So if you're curious about leagues or thinking of grabbing a cue and taking the plunge, I hope you find the following information informative.
Joining the 8-Ball Pool leagues in Guernsey?
You’ve taken the first step already by finding our Pool league. Our leagues operate year- round with ongoing winter and summer seasons that last between 4-5 months.
You can typically jump in at any time by getting signed up for a current team.
Or if you want to enter your own new team, you can wait till the start of a new season. (Sept/Oct for winter and May/June for summer leagues.) Look out for league registration timelines and deadlines so you don't miss the next available start date. You can decide which league you're interested in playing in, either Tuesday or Wednesday, or you can play both evenings if you wish.
You can express your interest by sending an email to intleisure@gmail.com Please include your full name, email address and mobile number.
Once you are registered, we will invite you to set up an account.
We will then be able to keep you informed of all up and coming events and even help find a possible opening on a team, if you wish. It’s really that easy!
Team Leagues - Structure and Format.
It's good to understand how our leagues are typically structured.
We follow a classic round-robin tournament format.
Teams are divided into one of two divisions - either Tuesday or Wednesday. Within each division, the teams with a set number of players (usually 5-8 per team but some have larger squads) are put into a league draw which sets out the matches for the season.
We usually take a three-week break (excuse the pun!) during the Christmas and New Year festivities and we also try to avoid any other important calendar dates such as Valentines Day.
For the duration of the season (usually 18 weeks for the winter and 14 for the summer), your team will face off in a head-to-head match against every other team in your division, both home and away.
This results in each team having the same number of scheduled matches to play over the course of a season.
The winner of each individual frame earns a point for their team and one further point is awarded to the winning team of each match.
Within a given match, each player plays three frames of 8-Ball against other players on the opposing team.
So for a five-person team, that's 15 individual frames.
The team that wins the majority of those frames wins the overall match - and that extra point. Simple as that!
Team league matches are generally played on a predetermined date given in a fixtures list that is published on our App. One of the great things about our leagues is that you can see the whole season’s fixtures well in advance and notify your captain of which dates you can be available to play and when you can’t (you may have a loved one’s birthday or be on a well deserved holiday break!).
Individual Leagues - Structure and Format.
Individual leagues are also typically structured with a classic round-robin format.
Players are divided into one of three divisions (this may expand to more).
They are put into an automatic league draw system which draws all the matches for the season.
Matches are played at the participants’ convenience - you coordinate with your opponents to schedule games and venues, whatever works best for everyone.
All matches have to be completed within a set period (currently 16 weeks between October and January) and you’ll play 6-7 opponents both home and away during this time.
Flexibility is one of the great things about the Individual Leagues.
Players will also usually take a break during the Christmas and the New Year period and also tryto avoid any other important personal dates.
Within a given match, you'll play a race to 8 frames of 8-Ball Pool against your opponent, so that's 15 frames maximum. As soon as one player reaches 8 frame wins, that player is deemed the winner with each frame won scoring 1 point plus the winner scores 3pts extra, a close defeat (reaching 6 frames) for losing player scores 1 pt extra point, so a close encounter sees the loser better rewarded than in a thrashing.
A fixtures list is published on our App.
One of the great things about our leagues is that you can see the whole season’s fixtures well in advance and notify your opponent of which dates you can be available to play and when you can’t, making it easy to schedule your matches.
Your personal rankings and performance tracked on our App. (For further info, see the FAQs section below)
So in Summary.
As a pool player you'll be participating in individual games scheduled as part of a larger team or individual league matches over many weeks.
But how does your personal performance factor in?
Well, we use our Gsypool.com app to track and score all the frames a player plays during their career with us.
The player uses the simple-to-use App to keep track of everything in one place . Fixtures, contact details of opponents and venues are also available.
This App allows us to keep detailed up-to-date stats on every player - things like your complete win/ loss records against every opponent you have ever played in individual games and your “Break Dishes” or “Reverse Dishes” (when a player completes a total clearance).
All league tables are published immediately after the scores have been submitted and are automatically updated in “Live” match view.
Based on all your stats from each completed match, you earn or lose points that determine your position on the league tables.
The team league also has a “Hotshots” leaderboard that ranks all players from highest to lowest, based on their cumulative season points and also tracks advanced stats like your win percentage. Higher positions mean you're performing better against your peers.
Your “Hotshots” standing is a great way to track your progress over time.
This gives you insight into specific areas to focus on improving.
You can even compare your numbers to the league's top performers for extra motivation!
Understand the basics - at your first match the real fun begins!
For newcomers, those initial games can understandably feel a bit intimidating. Don't worry, it's very normal to feel that way at first.
Here are some tips to help you get settled in and acclimatised:
● Introduce yourself and let your teammates know you're new to the league. Chances are, they'll be friendly and supportive.
● Focus on having fun rather than outcomes in your early matches. Losing is part of the learning process, so try to play loose and enjoy the experience.
● Communicate with your opponents. Most veteran players are happy to offer advice, so don't be afraid to ask questions during/after games.
● Take breaks if you start to feel frustration. Remember, it's just a game - no need to get emotional over results while you're still learning the ropes.
● Don't get discouraged by early ranking placements. Stick with it and your game/rankings will steadily improve over many matches. Small steady progress is the name of the game.
● Remember, even top league superstars were once newcomers themselves. So take it one game at a time, keep practising foundational skills, maybe watch some online videos and before long, you'll feel totally comfortable in the league environment. Stick with it - it's worth it!
● Developing crucial skills for success.
Now that you've dipped your toes in league play, It’s time to start developing your specific skills necessary to really excel over the long haul. In 8-Ball Pool, those crucial skill areas encompass both technical abilities as well as mental game aspects. Here are a few to focus your practice on:
● Positional play - effective positioning of the cue ball after shots is absolutely vital. Work on routines to consistently end up in the middle of the table, or specific zones, for shape on the next shot.
● Angle control - learning to manipulate subtle position changes using English* is critical for opens, combo shots, and navigating tricky tables. Practice feathering particular angles repeatedly.
*English = often used more in American pool, English is the term used to describe any spin imparted on the cue ball, whether that be top-spin, back-spin or side-spin.
● Cue ball speed - being able to vary speed accurately gives you much greater control. Whether soft speed for position or power for long shots, precise speed work pays dividends.
● Ball pocketing - while this may seem basic, consistency is king. Drill pocketing specific balls from set positions until it feels automatic.
● Shotmaking - once foundational skills improve, expand your shot vocabulary. Back-spin shots, bank shots, etc. are game-changers when you can trust them.
● Mental Toughness - frustration will happen but the ability to stay calm and focused through adversity separates top players from the rest. Meditation and positive self-talk are great coping mechanisms.
● Analytics - review your stats and find weaknesses to hammer away at. Set specific quarterly or yearly improvement goals to stay motivated long-term.
When developing skills, it's best not to try to learn everything at once. Pick one or two areas to deeply focus on between matches and see steady progress over weeks/months of dedicated practice. Patience, consistency, and continuous learning are the name of the game.
● Advancing your league strategy Beyond individual skill-building, another important consideration for excelling in leagues is establishing a solid strategic framework and routine, each season. Here are some key elements of an effective long-term strategy:
● Scouting and targets - analyse opposing teams/players to identify potential weaknesses or top threats to focus on. Have targeted aims each match.
● Communication - keep teammates informed of any scouting observations on targeted opponents or game status updates. Proper communication streamlines team strategy and success.
● Be Positive - Maintain positive mental energy throughout close matches.
● Late-season surge - earlier matches are for experimenting without pressure. Aim to peak your performance down the later stretch of the season.
● Stats review - between matches, critically analyse stats for adjustments. Opponents will make them too, so continuous evolution is key.
● Celebrate successes - take time after important wins/achievements to acknowledge progress. Positive reinforcement fuels long-term motivation and success.
● Rebounding from losses - mistakes will happen, but the mindset of “on to the next” prevents lingering disappointment affecting future matches.
Hopefully these pointers provide a solid foundation and process for developing as both an individual player and team contributor over multiple seasons.
Steady implementation is how most top competitors take their game to the next level year after year.

Having good fundamentals and a basic understanding of the rules is sufficient to start. Our leagues are a great way for newer players to learn and improve against opponents of similar experience levels.
Q: How much time commitment is required for league play?
A: On average, most seasons span 16-18 weeks. During that time, you'll need to liaise with your captain as to which dates you can and can’t play. Teams usually play 1 match per week depending on the league format. Match days will be set to either a Tuesday or Wednesday and stay set on that night for the season. IndIvidual leagues promote top players to more advanced divisions at the end of each season based on stats and league table position. Finishing high in your current division shows you're ready for stronger competition. Our leagues may also hold playoff tournaments for promotion spots.

A: Individual leagues are typically round-robin format.
Players are divided into one of three groups, an automatic league draw system draws the matches for the season.
Matches are played at the participants convenience - you coordinate with your opponents to schedule games and venues, whatever works best for everyone.
Q: How can I improve my game effectively between league matches?A: Focus targeted weekly practice on weaknesses identified in stats/reviews and by challenging yourself with new shots. Drill fundamentals regularly. Watch tutorial/pro videos to learn advanced techniques. Shadow play matches for mental practice. Try casual freestyle with a range of opponents. And most importantly, have fun! Creative, well- rounded practice yields steady, longterm gains.
